RAF Emergency Operations Room
In this scenario we portray a Battle of Britain emergency ‘ops room’ because the permanent one attached the main airfield has been bombed out.
The room consists of a control desk at which sits a senior controller and controllers A and B. Each member of the team has their own particular responsibilities. The map table displays the area covered by Sector 11, South East England and is covered by a senior WAAF controller and 4/5 WAAF operators. The Tote board records the state of all the squadrons held by the control room, this would require 2/3 WAAFs to operate and update, at the height of a heavy engagement.
Over the season the team have displayed this scenario in a limited number of locations, the Severn Valley Railway both week ends at Arley station in June and July and at Bantock House in Wolverhampton on a weekend in September. Both locations were well attended and the hosts have invited us back. Other events are being considered for next year and it is the intention to widen the scope and bring in more activities within the display, over the closed season we are looking to develop the set which may include more practical activities and a realistic sounds back ground as well as working on dressing the set to create the atmosphere of the operations room which will enhance the experience for visitors.
